Elizabeth City is the county seat of Pasquotank County, which is located in northeastern North Carolina. The city is situated on the Pasquotank River, which is an embayment of Albemarle Sound, at the southern end of the Dismal Swamp Canal on the Intercoastal Highway. The area was first settled in the 1660’s, and it was founded and incorporated in 1793 by the name of Redding. However, the settlement was renamed Elizabethtown in 1794, and then again in 1801 when it acquired its current name of Elizabeth City. The city was probably named for the wife of Adam Tooley, the original landholder of the area. The city was also developed into a major harbor that stimulated trade with the West Indies. Today, Elizabeth City’s economy is primarily made up of shipping, lumberyards, shipyards, textile mills, and diversified industries. The city was the site of Culpeper’s Rebellion in the late 1670’s, and is the home of the Elizabeth City State University and College of the Albemarle. Kitty Hawk and the Outer Banks are also located nearby. Some of the exciting attractions in Elizabeth City include the Rockfish Rodeo, Museum of the Albemarle, Halls Creek, and the Great Dismal Swamp.
