The city of Goldsboro is the county seat of Wayne County, in east central North Carolina, and is situated near the Neuse River, about 50 miles southeast of Raleigh. The area was first settled in 1838 and was named for Matthew T. Goldsborough, who was a member of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad and helped develop Goldsboro as a trade and shipping center for farm produce. Currently, Goldsboro’s economy is made up of a tobacco production, and light manufacturers consisting of textiles, furniture, food products, and automotive parts. Some major establishments in Goldsboro include the Cherry Hospital, O’Berry Center for children, Wayne Community College, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Governor Charles B. Aycock Birthplace State Historic Site, and the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park and Waynesborough State Park. Waynesborough Historical Village also offers great historic attractions, and Herman Park and the Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course offer fun recreational activities.
