The beautiful city of Kinston is the county seat of Lenoir County in east central North Carolina. The city of 24,000 is situated at the head of navigation on the Neuse River and is located only 25 miles southeast of Goldsboro. The area was originally settled as a planters’ trading post by William Heritage in 1740. The settlement was named Kingston, in honor of King George III of England, when it was incorporated in 1762. However, the “g” was dropped from its named in 1784. The city’s economy is primarily based upon a tobacco market and shipping of farm products, but the city also contains diversified manufacturers, including textiles and chemicals. During the American Civil War, a Confederate ironclad gunboat, Neuse, was sunk by its crew in 1865 in order to keep it out of Union control. When it was salvaged in 1963, it was laid on the riverbank, where it has been designated a state historic site. Kinston is also home to Lenoir Community College, which was opened in 1958 and offers great educational opportunities. The Lenoir Memorial Hospital is also located in the area. Other historical museums and monuments located in Kinston include the Cultural Heritage Museum and the Lenoir County Korean and Vietnam War Memorial.
