The city of Mount Holly is located in southwestern North Carolina in Gaston County. Mount Holly lies along the western bank of the Catawba River in the Southern Piedmont region and has a population of about 10,000 residents. Much of the land in Mount Holly was given as land grants by King George II of Great Britain around 1750. Although the first post office, which was built in 1838, was named Woodlawn, the name of the town was changed to Mount Holly in 1875. The name was taken from the Mount Holly Cotton Mill that was established earlier that year. Due to the convenience of modern transportation, the neighboring cities of Charlotte and Gastonia have helped to bring wealth, growth, and development the Mount Holly. Although the textile industry still plays a major roll in Mount Holly’s economy, the city’s economy has diversified to include other manufacturers and industries. Despite the city’s location near major urban developments, the city has worked to preserve a relaxed lifestyle and high quality of life that still includes all of the wonderful services of any great city. Residents and visitors can find excellent dining, shopping, and recreational experiences in and around Mount Holly.
