Located near the southwestern border of North Carolina, the city of Rockingham is located in the beautiful Richmond County and has a population of about 10,000 residents. Rockingham is also the county seat of Richmond County, and the city gained its name from the Marquis of Rockingham, Charles Watson Wentonworth. Wentonworth was a major supporter of the Colonies, and he was Prime Minister in 1765. The city was founded in 1774, and it was incorporated in 1784. One of the popular attractions in Rockingham is the Thursday Plaza Jam, which is a musical event that is held on the first Thursday of every month from May through October. Rockingham is also home to the Rockingham Speedway, formerly known as the North Carolina Speedway, which was home to a major NASCAR race for nearly 40 years, until it was discontinued in 2004. Residents and visitors can also find great recreational activities at places in and around Rockingham, including the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge and Richmond Pines Country Club.
