About Rocky Mount

The city of Rocky Mount is situated on the border between Nash and Edgecombe Counties, in east-central North Carolina, and has a population of about 56,000 residents. Rocky Mount is conveniently located only 50 miles east of Raleigh. The area was first settled during the mid 1700’s by pioneers from Virginia after a war with the Tuscarora Indians. The settlement received the name Rocky Mount in 1816 probably to designate the location of the community’s first post office, which was located near rocky mounds and ridges along the Tar River. After the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad arrived in 1840, Rock Mount developed into a rail center, and Rocky Mount merged with the nearby village of Rocky Mount Hills that had formed around several cotton mills. Today, the railroad running through Rocky Mount is called the Seaboard Coast Line, and it bisects the main street and marks the boundary between the two counties that Rocky Mount is located in. The city’s economy is based upon a large tobacco market and diversified manufacturers including pharmaceuticals, textiles, furniture, fabricated metals, and chemicals. Rocky Mount is also home to the North Carolina Wesleyan College and City Lake, a popular recreational facility that offers great services to all of the city’s residents.
