The beautiful city of Shelby is the county seat of Cleveland County and is located in the Piedmont region in southwestern North Carolina. The city, which was originally inhabited by the Catawba and Cherokee Indians, is conveniently located only 40 miles west of the bustling city of Charlotte. Eventually, European settlers arrived in the area in 1760, and in 1843 the city was chartered and named in honor of Colonel Issac Shelby, who was a hero of the Battle of Kings Mountain during the American Revolution. Once the railway arrived in Shelby, the city experienced a surge of growth and development. Today, Shelby’s economy is based on textiles, as well as diversified manufacturing and agriculture. Shelby is home to major establishments including the Cleveland Community College, Gardner-Webb University, and Kings Mountain National Military Park. Some of the exciting events held in Shelby include the Cleveland County Fair and the Livermush Expo, which celebrates the unique delicacy, livermush.
