Located in eastern North Carolina, the city of Washington has a population of about 11,000 residents and is the county seat of Beaufort County. Washington is also within 20 miles of the city of Greenville. The city was established in 1776, when it was named after George Washington, the United State’s first president. This charming city has a relaxing small town appearance and atmosphere, and it was recently named the “Heart of the Inner Banks.” Some of the popular sites in Washington include the Turnage Theater, North Carolina Estuarium, and the Beaufort County Arts Council. The city also offers many great activities to its residents and visitors, including what is known as the Albemarle Tour, and a Historic Walking tour where people can see and explore the beautiful, historic homes, and enjoy all of the arts and craft venues that can be found throughout Washington. Great dining and shopping can also be found in Washington’s downtown district, and some of the great recreational activities offered in the area include fishing and boating. A monthly music and art festival, known as “Music in the Streets,” also takes place in Washington.
