Whiteville is the only city in Columbus County, where it is also the county seat. The city has a population of about 6,000 residents and is situated in southern North Carolina. Whiteville is known for being the birthplace and hometown of famous 20th century poet, A.R. Ammons, as well as being one of the places filmed in the 1996 film adaptation of Dorothy Allison’s novel Bastard Out of California.
