About Wilson

The city of Wilson is the county seat of Wilson County in east-central North Carolina. Wilson is situated about 45 miles east of Raleigh, about midway between Rocky Mount and Goldsboro. The area was first settled during the mid-18th century and was formed around a Baptist Church. During the settlement’s early days, it was known as Hickory Grove. When Hickory Grover merged with the neighboring town of Toisnot Junction in 1849, the city of Wilson was formed and incorporated. The city gained its name from General Louis D. Wilson, who died during the Mexican War in Vera Cruz. Although tobacco has always been the most important factor of Wilson’s economy, agriculture and light manufacturing have further diversified the city’s economy. Wilson is home to fine educational institutions including Barton College and Wilson Technical Community College. Some of the attractions in Wilson include the Golden Leaf Celebration, which consists of tobacco-judging contests and other activities, and the Tobacco Farm Life Museum. Wilson has a bustling population of about 45,000 residents.
