Home to 5,000 residents in Woods County along the Salt Fork Arkansas River, the town of Alva was established in 1893 as a land office for the Cherokee Outlet land run. Originally, Alva was the main base of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Since then, Alva has grown into a sizeable town based on a typical agricultural community. The Alva Regional Airport is open for local aviators, forcing most residents to fly out of other regional airports. Interestingly, the city is one of the few of its size in Oklahoma to still boast a daily newspaper, the Alva Review-Courier.
