In the 1800s, Thomas R. Cornelius learned of a plan to extend the Oregon and California Railroad right through his simple settlement and decided to develop it into a railroad station and rest stop. The simple settlement has turned into a city of 11,000 residents and survives today not because of the rail but agriculture and as a suburb of Portland. Situated 10 miles east of the Coast Range in Tualatin River Valley, Cornelius is surrounded by technology factories, nurseries and farmland.
