About Klamath Falls
Originally called Linkville, after the Link River nearby, when George Nurse founded the town in 1867, the city’s name was changed to Klamath Falls at its present location. Found 173 miles south of Eugene and home to 21,000 residents, Klamath Falls was originally inhabited by the Klamath Indians. An unusual nickname for the city is Iwauna, referring to the Indian name for a phenomenon that occurred when the river flowed up upstream at times of heavy gusts. The Applegate Trail was blazed in 1846 for emigrants on the Oregon Trail and passes just below the city.
