Placed along the curved I-84, the city of Ontario is located atop the Oregon-Idaho border and is 376 miles east of Portland and 58 miles northwest of Boise, Idaho. With 11,000 residents, Ontario is the largest community in far eastern Oregon, known as the Western Treasure Valley. Ontario was founded on June 11, 1883 by developers looking to create a city in anticipation of the coming railroads. Today, residents of an apartment or home for rent in Ontario can take advantage of that very same railroad that crosses through the city as well as the Ontario Municipal Airport. The region's primary industry includes the agricultural production of potatoes, sugar beets, and onions. The Heinz Frozen Food Company has become the area’s largest employer and along with big-box retailers like Wal-Mart and Home Depot, makes commuting into larger cities unnecessary and obsolete. Therefore, residents of an Ontario house or apartment rental enjoy convenient resources paired with a city rich in culture with access to many recreational opportunities, especially in the natural setting surrounding Ontario. The city is home to the Four Rivers Cultural Center. The Treasure Valley Community College is also located in Ontario.
