About Upper Darby
Just 20 minutes from the Philadelphia business district, Upper Darby is an easy 6 miles from the heart of the state’s largest city. With a population of over 81,000 residents, it is also one of the largest residential neighborhoods serving the city. The area was first settled in 1653 by a group of Swedish settlers, although the area is now quite diversified with dozens of nationalities represented. In 2007, the area began a Market Street revitalization to increase the friendliness and attraction of the major commercial area in town. Home Depot and a few other big-box retailers can also be found in town. The Upper Darby School District operates 12 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and the largest high school in Pennsylvania. Seven parochial schools also serve students in town. Conveniently located on the edge of the highly-urbanized downtown area, Upper Darby’s residents can easily walk or take a bus to work in the city, rather than paying for expensive city parking. Despite its closeness to the big buildings of central Philly, Upper Darby is protected in cove-like fashion by a variety of parks, namely Cobbs Creek Park, Naylors Run Park, Cobbs Creek-Karakung Golf Course, and McCall Golf & Country Club.
