Newport County’s Jamestown is located on Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. First settled in 1524 by Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, the area wasn’t fully utilized until 1636 when Dutch traders converted the area into a fur trading depot. Accessed by the Jamestown Bridge and Claiborne Pell Bridge, Jamestown is connected to Plum Point on the mainland and Newport on a neighboring island. Despite being surrounded by water, residents of an apartment or home rental in Jamestown can drive 31 miles into Providence in just over 40 minutes, allowing for easy commutes to and from work. Beavertail State Park, Fort Wetherill State Park, Fort Getty Recreational Area, Mackerel Cove Beach, Conanicut Battery National Historic Park, and Goddard State Park provide the majority of recreational opportunities for residents of a Jamestown house or apartment for rent. Community events like The Aquidneck Grower's Market draw large crowds, although most large festivals are held in conjunction with Newport, just over the bridge. The Jamestown School Department operates an elementary, intermediate, and high school in town, providing complete K-12 education on the island.
