Situated on the Beaufort River, the similarly named city of Beaufort was founded in 1711 and is the second-oldest city in South Carolina. Built on Port Royal Island, Beaufort’s relatively exclusive neighborhoods thrive on the traditions and culture of the south that it has managed to keep alive for so many years.
