Originally the home of Cheraw Indians, the only remnants of the tribe is the town’s name as European settlement in the area in 1750 completely renewed the area with the establishment of a village to tap into the growing river trade. Interestingly, Cheraw was 1 of only 7 places ever listed on English maps.
