Located south of Johnson City on the I-26 and 120 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee, Erwin serves a population of 6,000 residents in a dynamic community mixed with industry and residential living. The town’s name was actually Ervin before a postal mistake changed the town to Erwin, which was never corrected. Interestingly, in 1916, Erwin hosted the world’s only public elephant execution after it killed its handler. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Erwin can find work locally at Nuclear Fuel Services, the town’s largest employer, or CSX Railroad, although many residents choose to commute to other regional cities. A slew of local attractions have quickly become favorites for residents of an Erwin house or apartment for rent. The Erwin National Fish Hatchery, Unicoi County Heritage Museum, Coffee Ridge and Flag Pond, and Nolichucky River Fishing Area are the most popular landmarks. For residents in search of great recreation, Buffalo Valley Golf Course and Sherman Park are nearby as are Gathering Place Park, Veteran's Memorial Park, Erwin Linear Trail, and Rock Creek Park. The Erwin community also hosts the annual Mountain Expo, Summer in the Park Concert Series, and the well-known Apple Festival.
