About Franklin
Founded in 1799 and named after Benjamin Franklin, Franklin was designed to Prior to the Civil War, Franklin was the center of plantation economy and one of the wealthiest counties in the state. In 1864, the Second Battle of Franklin took place in town and has become the most-bloody 15 minutes in the nation’s history. Today, the city serves a relatively small agricultural community and has grown its residential areas to allow suburban living for residents of a Franklin house or apartment for rent that wish to commute 22 miles north to Nashville. The 30-minute drive is quite simple, along the I-65. Downtown Franklin, a 15-block historic district, features a picturesque American Main Street that hosts a number of small shops, eateries, and boutiques. Winstead Hill Park, Fieldstone Park, Cheek Park, Judge Fulton Greer Park, Jim Warren Park, Strahi Street Park, Pinkerton Park, and Fort Granger Park are the main parks in Franklin with the Bicentennial Park beginning construction in 2009. The parks host a variety of recreational activities and sports leagues, as well as community events such as Movies in the Park and Concerts in the Park. Forrest Crossing Golf Club, Franklin Country Club, Fairways on Spencer Creek, and Vanderbilt Legends Club surround the historic city with an abundance of greenery and challenging courses.
