About Shelburne

Located along the shores of Lake Champlain, this town within Chittenden County is comprised of about 7,000 residents. The town was named Shelburne in honor of William Petty, the 2nd Earl of Shelburne, a nobleman who was a member of the British Parliament and Prime Minister. In the past, Shelburne was mostly a farming town, but today, it supports a wide variety of business such as manufacturing and retail. Shelburne’s close proximity to Burlington also makes it convenient to travel to Vermont’s “Big City,” yet it is far away enough to protect the town from the overbearing hustle and bustle of major cities. Recently, a revitalization of Shelburne has taken place after the refurbishment of the town’s historic Shelburne Inn. Many of Vermont’s wealthiest families also live in Shelburne, such as the 4th generation Rockefellers, and the current Ambassador to Slovakia, Rodolphe Vallee. The town’s education system is supported by many popular schools including Shelburne Community School, Champlain Valley Union High School, Chaplain Waldorf High School, and Renaissance School. Due to its ample lake frontage, many Shelburne residents living in a house or apartment for rent can be found boating in Shelburne Bay in the summer, or ice fishing in the winter. A beautiful nature park, complete with trails and spectacular views of the lake adjoins the boating area. The town even comes complete with its own beach, Meach Cove, which affords residents a wonderful retreat for waterside recreation, picnics, and BBQ’s. Shelburne is also home to Vermont’s largest full care retirement community, Wake Robin. Other popular attractions located in this wonderful town include the Shelburne Museum, Shelburrne Farms, and the Vermont Teddy Bear Company.
