About Annandale

The land where the developing city of Annandale now stands was once part of a large plot of land owned by an Englishman, Col. William Fitzhugh. In 1685, Fitzhugh bought over 24,000 acres of land that he named Ravensworth. Over time, some land was sold off, but a majority of it was used as tobacco plantation fields. In 1830, the plantation became a community and was named Annandale, after a Scottish village situated at the mouth of the Annan River. It wasn’t until 1806 when the Little River Turnpike was completed in Annandale that the community started to expand. This turnpike linked Annandale with other major cities including Alexandria and Fairfax. Residents of Annandale have a wide variety of schools to choose from, ranging from elementary schools to colleges such as George Mason University. Annandale offers a wide array of recreational services and activities, including historic parks, nature centers, golf courses, fitness trails, an indoor ice rink, and a cross country ski trail. The city also offers miniature train rides, a natural preserve, and a model farm. There is also a unique part of Annandale unofficially known as “Koreatown” where a majority of businesses are either Korean-owned or cater to Korean interests, which was created due to the efforts of the Korean population to spur the revitalization of the area.
