The railroad passes right through the heart of town, which was originally named Slash Cottage until it was changed to Ashland in honor of Henry Clay’s estate in Kentucky. Today, the Ashland train station attracts many rail fans who love to watch the trains go by. Ashland also contains the nation’s oldest volunteer fire stations, the Ashland Volunteer Fire Company. After the relocation of Randolph Macon College to Ashland, the town has developed mostly into a small college town. Many of the residents of the town like to keep the town small and laid-back, which was emphasized even though they unsuccessfully fought off a bid to allow Wal-Mart to build a store in the area.
