About Bristol

Bristol is a city that once consisted of two separate towns, Sapling Grove and Goodson. The two towns were unified in 1890, and were named Bristol after the town in England. Bristol is located near the border between Virginia and Tennessee, in the Shenandoah Valley. The city was once a fort and trading post built on the site of a former Cherokee Village that served westward travelers moving along the Wilderness Road. Although Bristol is a unified city, both of the original towns still run their own government, school system, and public services. Today, Bristol’s economy is comprised of the manufacturing of electronic equipment, metal good, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. The city has a sound education system, including institutions such as the Virginia Intermont College, Sullins College, and King College. Bristol is surrounded by many natural attractions: Bristol Caverns, South Holston Dam and Lake, and Steele Creek Park. This city of about 18,000 residents has also been declared by the US Congress to be the birthplace of country music. The city is also host to the Bristol White Sox baseball team, a member of the Appalachian League. NASCAR driver, Kelly Denton, was born in Bristol.
