About Dunn Loring

Dunn Loring was one of the first platted subdivisions in all of Virginia, and it was founded by General William McKee Dunn in 1886. General Dunn owned about 600 acres of land located along what is now called the Washington and Old Dominion Regional Trail. Dunn then transferred the land to the Loring Land and Improvement Company, owned by himself, former Judge Advocate General, George B. Loring, and Washington temperance hotel proprietor, George H. LeFetra. The Loring Land and Improvement Company tried to develop the land into a town by constructing a railroad station and post office, however, after General Dunn died, development halted. Later, during the Spanish-American War, the founding of Camp Russell A. Alger helped the town to grow once again. Recent growth has opened up many housing opportunities for people searching for a house or apartment for rent in the area. After World War II, Dunn Loring became part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The residents of Dunn Loring have access to a variety of modes of transportation because the town is near both the Washington Dulles International Airport and the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and the Washington Metro. People living in the area are also close to many excellent schools including George Mason University, ITT Technical Institute, Marymount University, and Stratford University.
