About Fort Lee

Named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Camp Lee was originally the site for a military mobilization camp and a division training camp during World War I. After the war, the camp was taken over by the Commonwealth of Virginia and became part of a game reserve and the National Military Park of Petersburg. Once again, during World War II, Camp Lee was rebuilt for the site of the Quartermaster Replacement Training Center. After the war, the War Department declared that Camp Lee would continue to be a training center for Quartermasters, so the camp was renamed Fort Lee. In 1962, Fort Lee became a Class 1 military installation under Second United States Army. However, the Second United States Army was inactivated in 1966. In 1973, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command took control of Fort Lee. With a population of about 7,000, Fort Lee is home to the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command, U.S. Army Quartermaster Center and School, Army Logistics Management College, U.S. Defense Commissary Agency, U.S. Army Forces Command, and the 49th Quartermasters group. Two military museums, the U.S. Army Quartermaster’s Museum and U.S. Army Women’s Museum, are located in Fort Lee. The Kennr Army Health Clinic is also located in Fort Lee.
