The town of Stuarts Draft was established in 1749 when a man named Thomas Stuart purchased 353 acres of land along the South River, which is a tributary of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. The plain located on the south side of the river tend to channel the wind, forming a constant breeze in the town. Stuarts Draft has a population of over 8,000, and the town is known for being the home of the Bare House and Mill, which is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. The commercial and business life of the city is dominated primarily by a Target Distribution Center, a Hershey’s Chocolate Factory, and a McKee Foods factory. The town also offers substantial education at four county schools located in the area. Residents living in a home or apartment for rent in Stuarts Draft can find many fun outdoor and recreational parks in the area including the Kate Schneider Park, Friendship Park, and the Stuarts Draft Park where the annual Sweet Dreams festival is held. The town was also the home of the famous Shenandoah Acres, a popular resort that also offered camping, horseback riding, and a sand bottom lake. Unfortunately, the resort closed in 2004, but the area now contains many individual camp sites and hotels.
