About Aberdeen

The city of Aberdeen is located in Grays Harbor County, on the Pacific estuaries of the Chehalis, Wishkah, and Hoquaim Rivers. With the cities of Hoquaim and Cosmopolis, Aberdeen forms a tri-city area. The area of Aberdeen was first discovered by Captain Robert Gray, who named the sea side area of Aberdeen Bullfinch Harbour. In 1878, settler Samuel Benn formed a village around the harbor and merged it with the nearby settlement of Wishkah to form the city of Aberdeen. In 1895, the Northern Pacific Railway reached the area, and Aberdeen boomed to become a major commercial and industrial center. Today, those industries include fishing, tourism, seafood processing, and lumbering. Aside from being called the “Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula”, Aberdeen is also known as the “Birthplace of Grunge” and the birthplace of members of the band Nirvana, including Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. The city has created ties to Hollywood films Pirates of the Caribbean and Mission Impossible III. Aberdeen is the home of the ship Lady Washington, which was featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and Tom Cruise came to Aberdeen for a private viewing of Mission Impossible III, which has resulted in an annual “Tom Cruise Day.” Aberdeen is also home to the Grays Harbor College.
