About Bainbridge Island

With a population of 20,000, this island in Puget Sound was named by CNN / Money and Money magazine as the second best place to live in the United States. The island is also an extremely safe place to live, with crime rates well below the national average and of the surrounding Seattle metropolitan area. Bainbridge Island was explored by both George Vancouver and Navy Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, and it was in 1841 when Wilkes named the island after Commodore William Bainbridge. Originally, the island was a center for logging and shipbuilding, but today, it is mostly an affluent bedroom community for those who make the 35 minute commute on the Washington State Ferry to Seattle. The island has been focused on preserving the charm and beauty of the area through by preserving greenspace and keeping strict control over both commercial and residential development. The city has also been known for its successful sports programs including the Bainbridge Island Little League, and the high school lacrosse and sailing teams. The island offers great outdoor and recreational activities at its parks including the Fay Bainbridge State Park, Fort Ward State Park, and the Grand Forest.
