Kennewick is located in Benton county, southeastern Washington. This city is situated along the Columbia River, opposite Pasco and immediately southeast of Richland. The city was developed in 1892 by the Northern Pacific Irrigation Company. The city is mostly an agricultural area that produces alfalfa, corn, beans, sugar, beets, grapes, and cherries. The city also contains chemical and agricultural processing plants located near the confluence of the Columbia with the Snake and Yakima Rivers. Kennewick is most likely derived from an Indian name, which means “grassy place. “ The city has a population of about 66,000 residents. Kennewick is a major center for both sports and shopping. Both the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League, and the Arena Football League’s Tri Cities Fever play their home games in the Toyota Center. Hydroplane racing events also take place at the Water Follies event on the Columbia River.
