Kent is the second largest city in King County and has a population of about 90,000. The city also has the country’s third largest industrial area, but it’s often considered a suburb of the Seattle area. Kent was officially incorporated in 1890 with a population of 793, and was formerly named Titusville. Before development in the 1960’s and 1970’s the city was known for its fertile farmland and was also named “Lettuce capital of the world.” Today, many industrial companies have headquarters or establishments in the city, including Recreational Equipment Inc., Oberto Sausage Company, Seattle Bicycle Supply, Boeing, Whirlpool Corporation, and General Electric. Residents living in a home or apartment for rent can find many great outdoor recreational activities in Kent. In 2003, the city was named Sportstown of the year for Washington by Sport’s Illustrated. In 2006, a major entertainment center was completed, known as Kent Station. It contains a 14 screen cinema, restaurants, retail shops, and other forms of entertainment. Plans are currently being drawn up to add to Ken Station. Some major events that take place in this beautiful city include Canterbury Faire, Kent Cornucopia Days, a Farmer’s Market, Saturday Market, and the NHRA nationals at Pacific Raceways.
