Monroe is a city of about 15,000 residents, located in Snohomish County, Washington. The city was named for President James Monroe. If Monroe was primarily a logging community with the number of sawmills located in the surrounding woods. Later, as the logging industry began to decline, agriculture became the mainstay of Monroe’s economy and berry and dairy farms were established. If it wasn’t until the Great Northern Railway, which was completed in 1893, was built in the area, that business really began to prosper in Monroe. A Public Hospital District was also developed in Monroe, which soon attracted many excellent and well-known doctors. Monroe has always been a close-knit town where residents have always kept close relationships with one another. Because the city is located in a river valley with many forested areas, recreational and outdoor activities are a main aspect of life in Monroe. Some of these great activities include fishing, water rafting, skiing, hiking, climbing, camping, and swimming. The city also has its own farmer’s market that is held each week, where fresh, locally grown produce, arts and crafts, baked goods, and much more can be found.
