Located in Skagit County, Washington, Mount Vernon is a beautiful city with a population of about 27,000. Mount Vernon is also the county seat for Skagit County. In 1998, the city was rated #1 as “The Best Small City in America” by the New Rating Guide to Life in America’s Small City. The city is also known for its tulips, which grow extremely well in the pleasant climate of the Skagit Valley. Jasper Gates and Joseph Dwelley were the first people to settle along the Skagit River, and they are recognized as the city’s founders. Of course, the city was named after the garden and estate of George Washington. Due to the city’s close ties to the tulip, the Mount Vernon’s most popular and most celebrated event is the Tulip Festival. The most notable building in the city is the Lincoln Theater, which was originally a vaudeville, and then a silent movie theater, but today it hosts high school performances, local concerts, and classic and contemporary movies. Transportation offered in the city consists of a public bus system and an Amtrak railway system, as well as the nearby Bellingham International Airport.
