With a population of over 6,000 residents, Steilacoom is a town located in Pierce County on the coast of Puget Sound. Steilacoom was incorporated in 1854 as the first incorporated town in the state of Washington. Steilacoom was founded by Lafayette Balch, a sea captain from Maine, and the city first began to prosper through manufacturing and exporting lumber to San Francisco. As the state of Washington grew from a territory, Steilacoom was the leading candidate to become the territorial candidate, however, when the Northern Pacific Railroad picked the rival city, Tacoma, for its west coast terminus in 1873, Steilacoom’s influence was reduced and the town became a suburban bedroom community. Residents living in a home or apartment for rent can find Steilacoom to be an extremely relaxing, peaceful community. The town also takes part in several exciting events, including the Apple Squeeze, Concerts in the Park, Holiday at Town Hall, a Salmon Bake, and a Town-Wide Garage Sale. Steilacoom also has numerous, beautiful parks where residents and visitors can have a great time and take part in fun, recreational activities.
