About Sumner

Located near the cities of Puyallup, Enumclaw, and Auburn, the city of Sumner is located in Pierce County and has a population of about 9,000 residents. The area where Sumner is now located was first settled in 1853. The town was platted in 1853 and named after Senator Charles Sumner, and then in 1891, the city was officially incorporated. Hop growing was the main economic base of Sumner in its early life. It was this form of agriculture that brought prosperity to the growing city. However, in 1895, Sumner suffered from a major fire in its downtown district, and as a result the destroyed area was rebuilt using brick and stone construction. Much of this rebuilt area of the city consists of popular antique and specialty shops. One of the most popular attractions that take place in Sumner is the Daffodil Parade, which is an annual, four part celebration that takes place in Tacoma, Puyallup, Orting, and Sumner. Some other events in Sumner include the Sumner Arts Festival, Music off Main, and a scavenger hunt in downtown Sumner. The city also offers great outdoor and recreational activities at its Daffodil Valley Sports Complex and numerous, beautiful parks. Sumner is an excellent place to live, and it has services and activities for people of all ages.
