About Beckley
Beckley is the county seat of Raleigh County, which is situated in southern West Virginia, approximately 50 miles southeast of Charleston. The settlement was first established by General Alfred Beckley in 1838; however, the city didn’t begin to grow until 1890, with the start of commercial shipments of smokeless coal from local mines. When the prosperous Winding Gulf coalfield opened in 1907, Beckley’s population boomed. Coal is still a vital part of Beckley’s economy, but tourism and various manufacturing industries also play a significant role. The city is also home to Mountain State University and Bluefield State College. Beckley has a population of about 18,000 residents. Some popular attractions in Beckley are Lake Stevens, which offers recreational activities, Tamarack, which sells “West Virginia Made” products, Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, and the Little Beaver State Park. The Grandview Unity of New River Gorge National River is also located near Beckley. Beckley is a beautiful city that has something great to offer to all of its residents and visitors.
