About Bridgeport

Located in Harrison County, the beautiful and charming city of Bridgeport has a population of about 8,000 residents. The city of Bridgeport has a history that goes back to pre-Revolutionary War times, and the city was chartered in 1816 and incorporated in 1887. John Simpson was one of the first settlers in the Bridgeport area, and he established the fur trade as the first business in the region. Later, the economy changed to the lumber trade. After that, farming became the economic base of Bridgeport. The establishment of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad railway in Bridgeport helped increase the cattle and livestock industry in the city. One of the most historic landmarks in Bridgeport is the Simpson Creek Baptist Church, which is recognized as the oldest Baptist church in West Virginia, as well as the oldest Protestant church west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is believed that the church was established in 1774. Bridgeport is also home to the Meadowbrook Mall, a 100 store regional shopping complex.
