Located in Mineral County, in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, the city of Keyser is situated on the North Branch Potomac River. Keyser is about 22 miles southwest of Cumberland, Maryland. The area was first settled in 1802, and it was known as Paddy’s Town, for Patrick McCarthy, who was granted the land in the area. After a railway belonging to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was established in the settlement in 1852, the settlement was renamed New Creek. Then, in 1874, the community was incorporated as a town and was once again renamed in honor of William Keyser, the railroad’s vice president. The city has an extensive military history relating to the American Civil War. The city is the home of the Potomac State College of West Virginia University, as well as Fort Ashby. Keyser’s economy consists of light manufacturers including explosives, plastics, clothing, and paper products. With a population of about 6,000 residents, Keyser is also known as the “Friendliest City in the U.S.A.” A popular attraction in the area near Keyser is the Allegheny Wildlife Management Area. Another exciting event that takes place in the region is the Strawberry Festival. The region also offers excellent recreational and outdoor activities such as fishing, golfing, hunting, boating, and canoeing. Keyser is a relaxing and wonderful city to live in.
