Located along the Kanawha River, a majority of the city of Nitro is situated in Kanawha County; the remainder is located in Putnam County. Nitro was incorporated in 1932 by Circuit Court, and the city has a population of about 7,000 residents. The name of the city comes from nitrocellulose, and the city received its name from the US government because the city was selected as the US’s ammunition production facility during WWI. The region in which Nitro is located is also known as “Chemical Valley” because at its peak in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, the region was the leading producer of chemicals in the world. In addition to great shopping and dining opportunities in the areas in and around Nitro, the city also has great historical attractions and recreational activities. Some of the museums located in Nitro include, Avampato Discovery Museum, the Cultural Center, and Museum in the Community.
