Located in Eau Claire County with a population of about 7,000 residents, the city of Altoona is a main railroad terminal on the Union Pacific Railroad. The area was first settled in 1881when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha Railway chose Altoona as the site for a new terminal to replace the overcrowded, existing terminal in Eau Claire, which is only three miles away. The growing community was called East Eau Claire at first, but confusion between the two cities led the city of East Eau Clair to be renamed Altoona in 1882. Altoona is a great place to live in because of its high quality of life with a small town atmosphere. The beautiful city of Altoona boasts that it can provide all of the essential services for its residents, including excellent schools, quality homes and neighborhoods, recreational facilities and activities, and an efficient city government. Residents in Altoona can easily travel to the nearby city of Eau Claire, where the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, and Cippewa Valley Technical College are located, as well as medical facilities, shopping, and many other interesting attractions. Some exciting community events in Altoona include Active and Alive in Altoona, and Ski Sprites Water Ski Show Team performances.
