Situated in Jefferson County, Fort Atkinson is a charming city located on the Rock River, a few miles upstream from Lake Koshkonong. With a population of about 12,000 residents, Fort Atkinson was named “One of America’s Hottest Little Boomtowns” by Money Magazine in 1996. The city is located at the site of Fort Koshkonong, and the city was named in honor of General Henry Atkinson. The city is also located near the General Atkinson Mound Group, which is a group of Indian mounds. Much of the city’s economy consists of various industries, health care, and tourism.
