About Hartland

Hartland is a beautiful village located in Waukesha County, along the Bark River, with a population of about 8,500 residents. The village was established after the Sylvanus Warren family, who lived in Ann Arbor, moved west and ended up buying about 200 acres of land between Maple and Cottonwood Avenues in 1839. Warren used this land to establish a small settlement, and soon became the first real estate man, settler, and builder of Hartland. However, the village was originally named Warren, and around 1837, other pioneers settled in the area and began farming the fertile land in the Bark River Valley. In the village’s early days, it was known as a great recreational site. Then, after the railroad was built in 1854, the village was renamed Hartland, after the Indian word “Shabaquanake.” Hartland was officially incorporated as a village in 1892, and even to today it remains a charming village located in fertile farmland.
