The city of Menasha is located on the border of Calumet and Winnebago Counties and has a population of about 17,000 residents. The city consists of the Town of Menasha, Town of Harrison, and part of Doty Island. Menasha lies along Lake Winnebago and the north channel of the Fox River. The city is located just south of Appleton, and only 30 miles south of Green Bay. The first people to live in the area were the Menominee, Fox, and Winnebago Indians, who were visited by the French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1634. Menasha took its name from a Native American word meaning “settlement on the island.” The city’s economy is comprised of flour and paper mills, which use the river’s waterpower, as well as printing, publishing, and packaging industries. Menasha is also home to the University of Wisconsin – Fox Valley campus, which houses a planetarium and earth sciences museum. The High Cliff State Park is also located in the area. The region in which Menasha is located offers many great recreational activities. The area contains over 200 acres of parkland, eight miles of biking and hiking trails, and a community / recreational center.
