About Oconomowoc

Oconomowoc is a charming city located in Waukesha County with a population of about 13,000 residents. The name is derived from the Pottawatomie term, Coo-no-mo-wauk, which is the term used for distinguishing a waterfall in the vicinity. Oconomowoc first began to develop in 1837 when a European settler, Charles Sheldon, settled in the area. Soon after, tradesmen followed and settled in the area. One of the tradesmen, John S. Rockwell, built a gristmill and owned the first store and hotel and established many other essential settlements in the area. This work earned him the title “Father of Oconomowoc.” Because of the beauty of Oconomowoc’s lakes, wealthy families from the nearby cities of Chicago, St. Louis, and Milwaukee moved to the Oconomowoc and built lavish mansions. Today, the summer mansions have become permanent, year round residences, and light industry helps make up the economy of Oconomowoc, which was once primarily a vacation destination. The city of Oconomowoc is also home to the Olympia Resort and Spa, which gained its name because of the five O’s in Oconomowoc, the same number as the rings in the Olympic Games logo. Various, excellent schools are also located in Oconomowoc, including Oconomowoc High School, which has a 53 acre campus that includes a sports complex. The city also offers excellent dining, shopping, and recreational experiences. Some of the exciting attractions and events in Oconomowoc include a Farmer’s Market, Gallery Night, the Badgerland Water Ski Show Team, and Oconomowoc’s annual Christmas parade.
