Known for the slogan, “Where the North Begins,” the city of Portage is located in Columbia County and has a population of about 10,000 residents. The city is named for the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, which is a portage between the Fox River and Wisconsin River. Today, Portages is a business center in a diversified agricultural region, and manufactures plastics, batteries, automotive accessories, and glass, as well as the food processing industry. In 1851, Portage won the title as county seat, and in 1854, the community was officially incorporated as Portage City. The city is known for being the home of author Zona Gale and naturalist John Muir. Portage is also popular for the ski areas and wildlife refuges located in the area. One of the most celebrated events in Portage is Canal Days, which refers to the Portage Canal that is located near the city. The city also hosts the Taste of Portage Market Fair, which consists of great arts and crafts booths, food, music, car shows, and fun activities. Portage is an excellent city that offers great dining, shopping, and recreational opportunities.
