With a bustling population of about 80,000 residents, the city of Racine is located in Racine County, southeastern Wisconsin. Racine is situated along Lake Michigan and the mouth of the Root River, and is only 25 miles south of Milwaukee. Some of the fist people that inhabited the region were the Miami and Potawatomi Native Americans. Racine was founded in 1834 by Gilbert Knapp, who was a lake captain, and was named Port Gilbert. As the city’s harbor developed and railroads were built in the area, Racine developed into a major industrial and shipping center. Many Danish immigrants have also settled in the city of Racine. Some large establishments in Racine include the SC Johnson administration and research complex, the University of Wisconsin – Parkside, the Gateway Technical College, as well as the Racine Art Museum, Wind Point Lighthouse, and a free zoo and history museum. Racine also offers excellent dining, shopping, educational, and recreational opportunities. Racine is an excellent city to live in and it has something great to offer to everyone.
