About Waunakee

Located in Dane County, the village of Waunakee has a population of about 10,000 residents. The village gives itself the title “the only Waunakee in the World.” The village was founded in the Fall of 1870, and it was formerly incorporated in 1893 as the Village of Leicester. In 1870, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad was expanding its railway through the area where Waunakee is currently located, and two early settlers, Lewis Baker and George Fish, who owned land along the railroad line, decided to plot a village along the railway. After the village was established, Lester was the name proposed, but Mr. Fish and Mr. Baker decided to go with Waunakee, which is an Indian name meaning “the fair and pleasant valley.” Residents living in a home or apartment for rent can find the Village of Waunakee to be an extremely relaxing and peaceful community to live in because of its small town atmosphere, even though it offers all of the great services of an urban center. There are many beautiful parks located in Waunakee, including the Castle Creek Conservancy and Ripp Park, all of which offer fun outdoor and recreational activities. Waunakee also hosts the annual Waunafest Run, which is a 10 mile certified run.
