The Town of Jackson is the county seat of Teton County and is located in northwestern Wyoming at the southern end of the Teton Range, just north of the Snake River. The town is known as a center of an important recreation and tourist industry. The region was first explored by the fur trapper John Colter in 1807; however, the city was named for another trapper, David Jackson, who worked in the area in the 1820’s. David Jackson organized summer meetings of the mountain men who trapped in the Rocky Mountain region. Eventually, the area surrounding Jackson became the site of several large ranches, all of which were supplied by the town. Today, many of those ranches have been sold and redeveloped as large vacation homes, and Jackson’s economy is primarily based on service and Tourism. The area just outside of Jackson is home to popular natural attractions including Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole, which is also called Jackson Lake, and the National Elk Refuge. Many ski resorts are also located in the town’s vicinity, including the Snow King Resort, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and Grand Targhee Resort. The Jackson Hole Airport is also located nearby.
