About Lander

Located in west-central Wyoming on the Popo Agie River, east of the Wind River Range, at an elevation of 5,360 feet, the city of Lander is the county seat of Fremont County. The Native Americans belonging to Shoshone tribe were the first people to settle in region, and the area was settled by the Europeans in the 1870’s around Forts Augur and Brown and named in honor of Colonel F.W. Lander. The city’s economy is primarily comprised of ranching, lumber, oil wells, coal mines, iron ore, and uranium. To the north of Lander are the Wind River Indian Reservation and the grave of Sacagawea. The city has a population about 7,000 residents. Some of the natural attractions located near Lander include the Sinks Canyon State Park, Shoshone National Forest, and the South Pass, which is an important landmark on the Oregon Trail. The city also hosts the annual One-Shot Antelope Hunt. Lander also offers many great outdoor and recreational activities including camping, hunting, fishing, wilderness travel, climbing, and mountaineering. The Wyoming Catholic College is also located in Lander, and it offers great education.
