About Rock Springs
The city of Rock Springs is situated in Sweetwater County, southwestern Wyoming, on the Bitter Creek at an elevation of 6,270 feet. Located only 13 miles east of Green River, Rock Springs is a community developed among beautiful sagebrush plains and hills. The city was named for a nearby spring, and in 1862, the city became a stage stop. However, after the introduction of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868, the city developed into a coal mining and ranching community. Today, Rock Springs’s economy consists of soda ash, oil, natural gas, and livestock production. Some major establishments in the city include the Western Wyoming Community College and Rock Springs Historical Museum and Western Wyoming Natural History Museum. The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is located in the area, and the city is also considered the gateway to Jackson Lake, the Wind River Mountains, the Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone National Park. The city also hosts the annual Wyoming’s Big Show, which is an event that features a carnival and concerts that are held at the Sweetwater County Events Complex.
